Penny's first birthday party was a lot of fun. We kept it small with just Tray's and my parents and my brother. I did a farm animal theme and baked and decorated a cake to match the plates and things I bought. Penny really seemed to enjoy herself. I was worried beforehand that she would be scared with everyone here at once. She wasn't though. In fact, she seemed to enjoy being the center of attention. She surprised me also be being so attentive to everything that was going on. She opened each gift and played with everything - even the "boring" non-toy things. It seemed like she liked everything she got. The cake I made was non-dairy so she ate some of that and had a ball tearing it to shreds. I saw her take about ten or twelve bites, but mostly she smeared it everywhere. So now we have our requisite baby-covered-in-birthday-cake photos. My family was the last to leave and after everyone else was gone, she really took a liking to my brother, Chris. She walked over to him wanting him to pick her up several times. I think they'd have been fast friends if he could have stayed longer. Here is a link to a snapfish album of the big event.
In other news, she's liking her shoes. She will pick them up and acts like she wants you to put them on. I think she now associates putting them on with going outside. This evening it was raining so I didn't want to go out, but I could tell she did and she tried to get me to put her shoes on. It seemed like she thought if she could get me to put her shoes on that would mean we could go outside. It won't be long before we spend most of our days outside I'm sure. The only problem is the bugs. In her birthday photos she has a mosquito bite on her face from almost a week ago. Sometimes the whelps are as big as a quarter and I know they have to itch. I've tried bug spray, but she still gets bitten once or twice even wearing it and I really hate putting chemicals all over her. Plus, I hate how it smells. Anybody have a solution?
