Heebies

I forgot to tell you guys this story. When we moved into our house in Tallahassee, the upstairs bedroom that would later become Penny's nursery belonged to a very angsty teenage girl. As many of you already know, it was painted blood red and all the baseboards, window and door trim were painted jet black. The walls were covered with photos and pages of magazines and the like, all stapled to the wall, which meant hundreds, if not thousands, of staple holes. In the spaces between pictures, she had written on the wall with regular pens, markers, and sharpies. In a couple spots, she'd used puff-paint for a 3D effect. Her favorite subject was the band Nine Inch Nails, so NIN was written all over the place. After we moved in, I painted over it all with KILZ. Two coats. And then two coats of orange paint that I liked. The writing still showed through. In fact, it seemed to bleed through more and more as time went on. Two more coats of oil-based KILZ and two more coats of yellow paint that Tray liked - and a couple spots where I used the dremel tool and dug down through the paint to rip off sections down to the drywall - and viola! a nicely painted room.

...

One night, Tray and I were asleep and he woke me up having a nightmare. He was acting agitated and saying, "nooooo" in a spooky faraway kind of voice. I shook him awake and told him he'd been having a nightmare. He was still half asleep when he told me that in his dream he was being chased around the garage by a Chucky doll. I said, "I'm sorry. That must have been awful." He goes, "no, it's ok. I was winning." and promptly fell back asleep.

...

A couple days after the people who bought the house from us moved in, the phone rang and it was Felipe (the new owner). He said that they had found something wrapped in a sheet in the attic. I had seen the sheet back up in the rafters, but didn't ever climb in there to see what it was, and honestly forgot about it when we were moving out. You'll never guess what it was. A Chucky doll. Felipe was calling to ask what was up with it? Like, I guess to see if were we trying to spook them or something. It still gives me the heebies thinking about it.
